By Caitlin R.

There are rites of passage that belong to the Australian teenager that will come to define their generation, and they are ever changing, forming the diverse pool of generational characteristics that have made Australia a nation of perpetually shifting ideas. One that has remained static, however, is the coming of age tradition of music festival attendance. Until now.

Music for the modern, middle class teenager lacks the sparkling admiration of their parents – yearningly anticipated hard covers, crisply scented lyric booklets, the unprecedented sense of discovery – and substitutes clenched fist passion for instant access and quantity.

Music, once a religion of cherished memories, is now found in tweenie-bopper movies, car advertisements and internet porn. There are no sacred grounds. Sentimentality has incrementally drained from the one medium assured to provide genuine, at times primitive emotion. Cheapened are the tender nights spent with the windows half opened, arid summer air rolling in, shrilly rehearsing the words to revolutionary bands until your voice connects with the record and you are part of the moment. Cheapened are the times we felt sincerely alive.

Festivals are dying. For every thriving Big Day Out there is a plethora of festivals that sink and drown in a sea of poor ticket sales, debt and general apathy; and the only one with the lifeboat is you.

Publicity for the BAM! Festival rendezvous was not timid nor was it scarce, but the festival was cancelled, burnt out by the meagre flame of interest. All attempts by organisers were made – tickets sold 2 for 1, competitions numerous and an intriguing list of bands secured, but all to no avail. The BAM! Festival team apologized, refunded tickets, and went to pray for the citizens that cared more for the mindless smears of Xbox pixels than the impassioned, life affirming invigoration of live music. An official statement confirmed the festival had ‘not sold enough tickets to run’, a eulogy that has completed its hasty transition from anomaly to regularity. The Lost Weekend, Homebake, and Strawberry Fields are among many Australian others forced to cancel last minute, all citing lacklustre ticket sales as the perpetrator.

Our festivals are dying, Australia, and we are the murderers. In a society that thrives off popular culture like no other, we are conforming to its limitations. But pop culture, while easy to blame for dwindling interest, is not the sole reason more screens are seen at concerts than smiles. It is the desensitisation of a generation who have been promptly provided with their most superfluous desires. This nature of constant consumption has thrashed appreciation into entitlement. To any besotted parents with voluptuous pockets, don’t buy your twelve year old daughter a camera to filter out her life.

Australia’s music charts, adorned in the past with glorious beacons of rock and roll (ACDC, anyone?), feature three drivelling songs by Justin Bieber, and that’s three more than we needed to hear. Not content with feeding off America’s dreary pop produce, we have become a laughable imitation of its worst contenders.

Cody Simpson, at an age where writing English essays and discovering hormones wins priority, is Australia’s very own Bieber, filling our radios with a pitch that hasn’t met puberty, detailing the perilous plights of upper class teenagers. And we are eating it up. Forget obesity, Australia is on a strict diet of empty choruses and the four power chords. It doesn’t come free, either. The money we once spent on music paid for the artist’s board, food and instruments. Now we spend it on downloads. On ringtones. On notebooks and badges and biographies. Why are festivals dying? Not because we lack the money, but because we are pre-programmed by popular culture to throw it at materials and status, rather than memories that blossom long after the novelty of a Lady Gaga coffee mug.

Each year the Soundwave pilgrimage lessens.

The music festival celebrates more than a fruit bowl of seductively scrumptious tunes; it embraces the richness of all that it is to be human. The most visceral emotions are released at festivals. The most feared sound in humanity is pounded from gasping chests. The Scream. It is the loudest, most evocative vibration to exit the mouth, yet it is withheld for decades. Only at music festivals does the Scream come to thrilling fruition.

Each stranger is linked at a music festival. A common purpose develops a distinct sense of flourishing community, comparable to nothing else on Earth. The emotional unification of thousands is almost unbearable in its scope. Every stereotype dies the moment the gates are opened and the flood of bodies stretch onto the field. There is ultimate catharsis when your ticket is checked, your hair is already bundled by sweat and you have twenty freshly made friends running, falling, galloping to the stage.

This is dying. Australia, put down your gourmet restaurant lunch, don’t buy that hair product, restrain from purchasing just one extra shirt. Hoard your pennies for what matters. Save the vanity for Europe. We are Australia and we don’t care about nail polish. We won’t pay for a blow dry. We work hard for our money and don’t waste it on petty things.

Australia, save our festivals.

For that release because we’re currently writing a new album we rerecorded an old song, Forever Chasing, from our ep. We still thought it was a good song and we still thought the fans still wanted to hear it. It wasn’t so much about being unhappy with it [to begin with] but the first version we wrote a week before we went into the studio. The ep was rushed; we just needed to release something.

Were there many changes to Forever Chasing?

It’s a lot shorter now.

What can we expect from heroes for hire in the future? Recording plans?

We’re currently writing at the moment. Haven’t locked into when we’re recording next but we’re going to find out very, very soon.

Will there be a different direction?

Not really a different direction. We don’t play the most technical music. As long as we’re having fun we don’t care if it’s technical. If we’re having fun, it doesn’t mean we have to reinvent the wheel.

Is there a theme in Life of the Party? Did this come about on purpose or just by chance?

Not really. Our band is more about just doing things as they come.

When you first started making music, what did you want other people to get out of it? What did you want to get out of it? Has this changed with time?

When we first started we didn’t want to have real jobs [laughs]. But now if kids forget about troubles or family life during our album then that’s great.

The best and worst things about soundwave2010?

Soundwave was huge. A friend of ours played last year to like 300, 400 people so that’s what we were expecting. Gates opened early and we were expecting 300 people. [We] Prepared for 400 people but there were 5000 people so it was a lot of pressure. The boys got really nervous.

Which tours do you prefer: large festivals like soundwave or intimate gigs like the current tour with House VS. Hurricane?

Big tours are easy. There’s guaranteed numbers and venues are pretty much always close to sell outs. I find tours like now push it and make it worth it.

What bands have you seen live lately that you loved?

It’s tough to get to concerts because we’re always touring. Touring is more the work. And home life is our holidays. We spend most of our time seeing other Australian bands.

What Australian bands are you expecting to be really big in the next year?

Tonight alive will really blow up this year. For our heroes are doing really well too. Both bands are currently on tour with 3oh3 so that’s exciting.

Let’s talk records, what are some of the most recent purchases you’ve fallen head over heels with?

Tonight alive. Emorosa. The Veara album.

Will you be attending soundwave 2011 to see verea?

Yeah, i will.

We’re Just a Footnote in someone else’s love story is such a brilliant, powerful song. With such sweeping melodies and honest lyrics, was it a hard song to write?

Duane actually recorded that. Every member of our band have been in other bands so we’ve all recorded since we were fifteen and we’re all pretty used to it.

What is the song you’re most proud of so far?

Bright lights is just a fun song for everyone to sing and dance to.

We recorded the album a fare while ago eight to ten months before it came out. We pushed harder and harder. We’re proud it actually came out. We were all struggling for money. We’re still struggling for money, actually [laughs].

How are you enjoying this tour so far?

We’re two shows in. Both been over 18s, not really a scene we’ve blown up in. They’ve been full though, which is good.

What is the best lesson you’ve learnt in this industry?

Not to give up or to take it when people hate you or crap like that. We still get it to the day.

They’ve started rule over the entire country. Starting their career with two explosive EP’s, the band has finally banded together to produce their debut album, Hold, Hold, Fire which strips your ears of their preconceptions. Whether you listen to Jack’s Mannequin, Paramore, Death Cab For Cutie or Owl City, Calling All Cars have proven themselves accessible and favoured by fans of any genre. The rock group are not bound by noise but forge a path through conventions.

The album’s opener, ‘Disconnect’, is similar to their earlier work, utilising lead vocalist, Hayden’s voice to heave above the cohesive, but nonetheless loud instruments. The pounding drums are the first thing to push heads up and down, merging angst with suspension. The tone fails to fade with the tracks ‘Run Away’. ‘Run Away’ and ‘Liar Liar’ featuring rushed and breathy lyrics with the same element that ruled ‘Disconnect’: rock. But as the track progresses it hits a wall of grunge. This layered technique could go wrong so easily, but Calling All Cars make is seem too good to be true, lifting the weight of the climax with a softer dialect which leads onto the tone of next track and new song, ‘Not Like Anybody’.

Clearly, ‘Not Like Anybody’ is a massive departure from the restless mood that weaved behind the beginning of the album. While there are no ties to screamo, Ing belts his heart out in defiance that ‘it’s better to leave a bitter taste’. Another interesting twist in this particular track is contrast. At points you feel Ing must have no throat left but then he will warp his chorus back to the steady beginning. ‘Not Like Anybody’ has a certain mock toward rebellion, enhanced deeply through the second person recount which gives the effect of a more epic, more story-like tragedy unfurling.

The title track ‘Hold, Hold, Fire’ revs up the tempo. Sparing no drumbeat a lingering timeframe, ‘Hold, Hold, Fire’ builds its power through swirling guitar that swamps versus. Again, Ing rips out his voice, further proving his ability to drive a song that was already going faster than sound. Toward the bridge, we see a momentary respite only to come clashing back to reality with a bigger bite than before. ‘This Ship Will Sail Without You’ is no less alive but just a little slower, adding a fresh breath of diversity to album. The tracklisting is spot on. With the onslaught that we experience, and most overtly, the discontent, ‘This Ship Will Sail Without You’ gives a well needed rest. Back on the path of rock ‘Soldier On’ and ‘Accident Waiting’ are without comparisons to early days, but this time with intense pride and certainty. The same can be said for ‘How Long’ which demonstrates how far Calling All Cars has come musically, obviously picking up and fine tuning their abrasive tunes to come out with the perfect balance of melancholy, rage and hope.

The album ends how it begun, with steam to hiss. There are too many good things about Hold, Hold, Fire to count but the development in comparison to the earlier EP’s is undeniable. There is never a filler moment on Hold, Hold, Fire. The album is relentless and a full on ride for those who dare to embrace it. Calling All Car’s debut is reminiscent of the sun; perpetually burning and scalding, but will guide you in the right direction if you let it.

The beginning of a festival is quite possibly the most exciting. Like Christmas Eve, only with far more anticipation and better music. The Blackout, not to be outdone by Soundwave’s organiser, AJ, annouced themselves to be confirmed via their Twitter:
